Possible Comeback for Beloved Silver Dollars
It has been almost 100 years since the transition of Morgan
Dollars to Peace Dollars. Both might make a comeback in 2021.
The House of Representatives has passed HR 6192, The 1921 Silver Dollar Coin Anniversary Act, which enables the mint to produce anniversary coinage in both the Morgan and Peace dollar designs. The bill, introduced by Rep. Andy Barr (R-KY) on March 11, 2020, is now in the Senate and was referred to the committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs for further review.
Morgan and Peace silver dollars have become some of the most widely collected coins in numismatics. The Morgan dollar was struck between 1878 and 1904, then reintroduced in 1921. In those years, Morgan dollars came from Philadelphia, Denver, San Francisco, Carson City, and New Orleans. Typically, dollars minted in Carson City (mint mark “CC”) or New Orleans (mint mark “O”) are more coveted than those from Philadelphia, Denver, or San Francisco.
The Peace dollar, struck between 1921 and 1935, followed the reintroduction of the Morgan dollar. Designed by Anthony de Francisci, the peace dollar features the Goddess of Liberty on its obverse and an eagle peering into the sunrise. Though many are found in worn conditions, better grades will often warrant a higher price.
The 2021 Morgan and Peace Silver dollars will be made to the exact specifications of its forebears—a diameter of 1.5 inches, .900 silver with .100 copper, weighs 26.73 grams, and will have a reeded edge. Both will be legal tender and considered as numismatic items.
The coins should also look similar in design, according to Section 4 of HR 6192.
“A) MORGAN DOLLAR.—The coins honoring the 100th anniversary of completion of coinage of the Morgan dollar shall have an obverse design and a reverse design that are renditions of the designs historically used on the obverse and reverse of the Morgan dollar.”
“(B) PEACE DOLLAR.—The coins honoring the 100th anniversary of commencement of coinage of the Peace dollar shall have an obverse design and a reverse design that are renditions of the designs historically used on the obverse and reverse of the Peace dollar.”
Though the bill has yet to pass, we are excited for these new coins. Check back for new updates!
