Obverse
Queen Elizabeth II is featured on the obverse side of the 2023 Canadian Maple Leaf Silver Coin. The effigy of the Queen has been modified four times for Canadian coins throughout the course of her reign. This design was created in 2003 as the fourth-generation portrait and was created by Susanna Blunt. The Queens effigy lacks a crown, a first in the history of her portraits on Canadian coins. Inscriptions on this face of the coin read ELIZABETH II, 5 DOLLARS, and 2023.
Reverse
A sugar maple leaf is found in the reverse design of the 2023 Canadian Maple Leaf 1 oz Silver Coin. The sugar maple leaf was designed in 1979 by Walter Ott for the Maple Leaf Gold Coin. Inscriptions on this face of the coin include CANADA, 9999, FINE SILVER, and 1 OZ ARGENT PUR.
History
In 2014, the Royal Canadian Mint began to introduce security features on its silver bullion coin. Both sides of the coins have radial lines engraved on the background field. The reverse of each coin has a micro-laser engraved maple leaf privy mark that bears the final two digits of the date mark. Within the privy mark are the numbers 23, which are only visible under magnification..
